Why government agencies are top targets for cyberattacks

With greater advancement in technology, comes greater risk of cyber-attacks. Cyber criminals are now not only targeting corporations, but they are also going after federal agencies. From local municipalities to federal departments, these agencies hold what hackers’ value-data. Lots of valuable data. Governments are unfortunately just an easy target. Poor maintenance, outdated software, reliance on legacy systems, and lack of resources to update their security measures leave agencies vulnerable. The result? Hackers see them as a soft target with high rewards.

Rising cost of Attacks

Of the many cyber attacking methods, ransomware attacks have grown significantly, and many have taken place in US cities. This has cost the government millions. According to Business Insider, an attack in Atlanta, Georgia in 2018, attackers demanded $51,000 in Bitcoin to unlock government encrypted systems. Another attack in Massachusetts was held at a massive $5.3 million dollar ransom with $400,000 being offered of insurance money. Whatever the amount and whatever the negotiation, it’s no doubt that these series of attacks all have one thing in common, which is poor cyber security, or at least poor management of it. Other costs include loss of public trust, downtime and reputational damage.

Fighting Back

Governments can stay prepared for potential attacks from both external and internal actors by implementing stronger cybersecurity and policies. Agencies like Interpol can learn to collaborate and share intelligence information to stay proactive against attacks. Agencies also need to leave behind outdated systems and adapt modern cloud infrastructure and technology such as firewalls or encryption software. Another way to fight back is to train and educate staff. Human error is a leading cause for data breaches, so constantly training them and making sure they are aware of such attacks can help mitigate them.

SAJ Tech’s Mission

At SAJ Tech, our mission is to help protect and modernize agencies using advanced technology and software solutions. By upgrading systems and implementing proactive cybersecurity measures, we can significantly reduce the risk of attacks.

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Modernize your systems today and stay one step ahead of cybercriminals.
